Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Haw Par Villa to stay open and provide free
admission
|
The
news is out! Haw Par Villa will not close after
all. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB), to whom the theme
park's former operators returned the premises after
suffering a huge loss, has decided to allow the
64-year-old mythological theme park to stay open. |
Haw Par Villa will get
back its old name - TIGER BALM GARDENS - and be
managed by Orient Management, headed by Colonel (Ret) CHUA
Tiong Guan, under a two-year contract. |
Another piece of good
news is that the revamped park will be open FREE to the
public, as in the good old days (70's and earlier) |
The park was supposed
to close on 1 Apr 2001 for renovation works, but STB
yesterday announced the park would stay open. It added
that the renovation works would now be undertaken
gradually without having to close the park and
inconvenience visitors. |
The preservation plan
centres on scaling the park back to its original four
hectare core, as created by the Aw brothers in 1937. The
use of the land parcels on both sides of the park, which
housed audio-visual theatres, a flume ride, amphitheatres
and restaurants, are being assessed to see how they can be
optimally used to reinforce the overall theme. |
Work to restore the
statues to their former glory has already started. Two
artisans who worked in the park during its heyday in the
'60s and '70s will continue to apply their art in the
cause of protecting the Chinese mythological exhibits -
the only remaining collection of statues of this genre in
Asia - against the ravages of time. |
In returning the park
to its original concept the STB will position the park as
a place where visitors can learn about the Chinese
heritage and mythology. |
By consolidating the
park back to its original size, the overheads associated
with operating the park could be reduced, making free
admission a viable alternative, with income derived from
food, beverage and retail elements within the park. |
