     The Straits Times' history

 

- Founder & proprietor: Catchick Moses, An Armenian
- Founding Editor: Robert Carr Woods
- First issue: 15 Jul 1845 published from No. 7 
     Commercial Square (now Raffles Place) as The Straits 
     Times And Singapore Journal Of Commerce.
 
 
- Woods bought over the Paper and sold it to Wynter &
     sold it to Wynter & Company in 1860.
 
- Wynter sold the Paper to T.A.C. Hodgson on 24 Aug
     1862.
 
- John Cameron became its editor and eventually 
     bought over the Paper.
 
- In 1895, the Paper moved into bigger rented premises at
     Finlayson Green.
 
- In March 1900, the Paper was sold at an auction for 
     85,000. It was converted into a private limited company 
     capitalised at 100,000.
 
- In 1906, the Paper moved to Cecil Street.
 
- The first issue of the Sunday Times came out on 20 Dec 
     1931.
 
- Singapore fell to Japanese invaders on 15 Feb 1942 and
     the Straits Times stopped publication.
 
- The first issue of post-war Straits Times came out on
     7 Sep 1945.
 
- On 11 Mar 1950, the Straits Times Press Ltd became a public company quoted on the stock exchange.
 
- Its first annual general meeting was held in Dec 1950.
 
- Its printing presses were moved into Times House in
     1958.
 
- Its daily financial newspaper first came out on 1 Oct 1976 
 
- Singapore Press Holdings was incorporated on 4 Aug
     1984. It is a merger of the Singapore News & 
     Publications Ltd* (SNPL), the Straits Times Press and
     Times Publishing Bhd.

      Chew Jit Poh (S) Ltd
 
- Its present corporate logo was adopted in March 1987
 
- Celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1995.
