Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Public Utilities Board (PUB) gets new logo and
becomes a comprehensive water authority
|
The
Public Utilities Board, popularly known by its acronym
PUB, received a new logo from 1 Apr 2001. On the same day, it
also became a comprehensive water authority with the
repeal of the Public Utilities Act (Cap 261) and the
re-enactment of the Public Utilities Act 2001. |
Responsibility for the reconstituted PUB as a statutory
board has been transferred to the Ministry of the
Environment (ENV) from the Ministry of Trade &
Industry (MTI).
|
In its new capacity,
PUB absorbs the Drainage & Sewerage Departments
hitherto with ENV. With the addition of these departments,
plus the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Department, PUB is
enlarged to comprise 10 departments.
|
The reconstituted PUB
also directly administers the Sewerage & Drainage
Acts, which were formerly administered by ENV.
|
At the same time, PUB's
other function as the regulator of electricity and gas
industries is placed under a new statutory board called
the Energy Market Authority of Singapore under MTI.
|
Singapore's domestic
water is moderately soft and treated (flouridated) to a
quality that is within the World Health Organisation's
(WHO) "Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality".
It is safe to drink from the tap.
|
With the current
population of four million, Singapore consumed a total of
455 million cubic metres of water in 2000, compared with
323 million cubic metres only 10 years ago when the
population was less than three million. The rate of
consumption has remained fairly constant, due to the many
effective efforts to conserve water and prevent leakage.
|
A decade or two down
the road, Singapore expects to accommodate a population of
six million, making our city state one of the most densely
populated in the world and enjoying the highest standards
of living.
