Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Singapore Latin Festival at Fort Canning Green
|
Los Reyes
|
The
most passionate festival in town is going to Fort Canning
Green! A complete showcase of Latin music, dance, food,
beer, wine and traditional handicrafts, the festival
is organised by Caldwell Arts Entertainment and jointly
sponsored by CHIJMES
and Singapore Tourism Board. This first Singapore Latin
Festival will be staged on 31st March and 1st
April at Fort Canning.
|
Highlights of the festival include band performances by
guest band LOS REYES, who will be flying in from
Southern France. Los Reyes, Spanish for ‘The Kings’,
have a musical heritage second to none. Their
distinguished 'Reyes' name has long been associated with
hot rhythms and exotic gipsy "Duende"
(spirit/magic), and is legendary amongst the gypsies
of the Spanish/French border region. Los Reyes have
developed their own original, passionate & explosive
sound combining their rich Gipsy traditions with Latin
& Mediterranean influences. Recently the band played a
landmark gig in front of 250,000 people at St. Peters
Square in Rome by request of the Pope, and were received
with rapturous
applause and singing.
|
In
addition to LOS REYES, audiences can expect hot acts from Neofonia
Ensemble whose repertoire reflects contemporary
music Latin America; Combinacion Perfecta which
plays a large variety of rhythms and music style such as
Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Cha-Cha, Andean & Mariachi
music and IRESON band that covers the exciting and
dynamic styles of Mambo, Cha-Cha-Cha, Merengue, Cumbia,
Danzon & Latin jazz. Audiences can also look out for
performances from latin group Folkloric Trio, and
dance to the beat of Tribal Tide which creates a
fusion of the musical roots of Latin percussion, African
Drums (Djembe), a Brazilian instrument called the Berimbau
and other percussion instruments from around the world. More...
