Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Heritage Hill - The Carnival at Fort Canning Park
|
The
Collins Co-Build dictionary defines HERITAGE as
"all the qualities, traditions, or features of life
that have been continued over many years and passed on
from one generation to another..." Heritage Hill -
The Carnival aims to give you an insight into
Singapore's diverse heritage.
|

here at Fort Canning Park this Saturday 17 Mar 2001 from
8am till 9pm.
|
Go on a
Heritage Hunt Car Rally, enter the Makan Trap, visit the
Art Village, explore the Kiddie Korner, or take a Heritage
Tour. There's something to keep everyone - young or old -
busy here. Indulge in old-fashioned fun at the Playing
Field where old kampong games, such as chaptay, gasing,
congkak, five stones and marble throwing, beckon you. And
if you don't know how to play or have forgotten how to
play them (for the older ones among you), the experts will
be on hand to teach you!
|
End the
day with a listen to the Heritage In Concert from 7pm to
9pm. Najip Ali will host this extravaganza of traditional
and pop culture which is packed with celebrities, such as
Jack Neo, Dick Lee, Mark Lee, Jessica Soo, Stoned
Revivals, Randall, Jai, Sheikh Heikel, Shayne Phua, Steven
Lim, Anna Belle Francis, Vinyl, Joe Pang and Chua Lee Lian.
