Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Monday with the Editor: No drugs here please!
|
Hallo |
It was just three weeks
ago that I spoke, in this column, about pornography - more
accurately, about keeping pornography out of this website
as many youngsters surf through our website. |
That day, I appealed to
visitors to keep off posting pornographic items on any
part of this website. Well, yesterday, a visitor left his
name in our Guestbook. We welcome him to do that. But,
along with his name, he also left a banner with the word
"hamp" on it. And on clicking through the
banner, I was taken to his website which was entitled
"Albert's Marijuana Cyberhigh". I couldn't make
out what the content was as it wasn't in English. But, its
pictures told the whole story. |
While I understand that
the Internet is open to everyone, I wish all of you to
know that when you visit this website, you are welcome to
read its contents. And if you should desire to leave a
message, by all means, please do so. However, please bear
in mind that on our website, we take offence when visitors
post unwelcome things, such as pornography or anything
that encourages the promotion of illicit drugs (that is,
illicit in Singapore, which is the base of this
website). |
For goodness sake, have
some sense of propriety and decency. Feel free to be what
you want to be, but do not corrupt the young,
impressionable minds who make this a frequent stop in
search of knowledge. We appreciate your help here. |
