NLB: Raise-A-Reader Workshop for young and would-be parents

Click logo to start tour

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

The National Library Board (NLB) is starting the inaugural run of its Raise-A-Reader Workshop in October and November. This is a community-based reading workshop for young and would-be parents conducted by NLB librarians.

At this 3-hour interactive workshop, participants will discover ways to cultivate the love of reading in their children (0-6 yrs of age). They will also learn how to create a supportive home reading environment for their children through meaningful activities and play (i.e. songs and rhymes, word games, music and movement, and craftwork).

Participants will gain an understanding of how the parent-child bond can be strengthened through reading together. The librarians will also provide tips on how to select books for children.

The aim of these workshops is to encourage parents to imbue the joy of reading in their toddlers and preschoolers, regardless of the literacy skills of the parents.

Reading together and discussing themes in books will strengthen the bond between parents and child, enrich language, broaden experiences and strengthen comprehension. Further more, children whose parents read to them often grow up enjoying reading.

Details of the workshop are as follows:

Geylang East Community Library (Tel: 3323255)

  - Sat 13 Oct 2001  1.30pm - 4.30pm

Bukit Merah Community Library (Tel: 3755111)

  - Sat 20 Oct 2001  1.30pm - 4.30pm
