Source: National Archives

The Jurong Drive-In Cinema was opened on 14 Jul 1971. Its premises, spread over an area of 55,602 sq metres, could hold about 900 cars and another 308 people in its gallery. Singapore's first open-air drive-in cinema was built on land leased from the Jurong Town Corporation (JTC).

The cinema was operated by Cathay. Viewers could listen to the movie from special speaker stands. Snacks and ice cream were also provided. There were two shows a day (7pm & 9pm). Tickets were sold at S$2 (adult) & S$1.00 (child).(2)

Dismal attendance due to competition from video pirates led to the cinema's closure on 30 Sep 1985.(1)

Read a short story, Reflections, in which the Jurong Drive-In Cinema is mentioned.
