Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

It's Chinese New Year's Eve today!
|
It's
Chinese New Year's eve and the markets in Singapore have
been opened 24 hours for the past two days. The Chinese,
as well as the other races, have been stocking up on food
items for the past few days - buying all they can carry,
taking the things home, resting for an hour or so, and
then scurrying back to the markets to buy more things.
People from the other races also have to stock up on food
items, as once the Chinese close their stalls and shops,
the markets and shopping areas in Singapore will be
deserted.
|
This morning the
markets remain open till noon, when everyone will take a
long break away from work to prepare for the big reunion
feast tonight and the Chinese New Year celebrations the
next few days. All coffeeshops around the island, and
almost every other business also close at about the same
time for the next few days. The shops may start opening,
perhaps as early as Sunday. Till then, people in search of
food have to depend on fast-food restaurants, such as
McDonald's and KFC, to satisfy their hunger. Of course,
7-Eleven and Cheers remain open 24 hours as well, together
with the hotels.

All schools in
Singapore today have short 2-hour sessions for their
students. There are no lessons today as students and the
school celebrate Chinese New Year with dance and musical
performances. To view a celebration at one of the
secondary schools this morning, click HERE!
