Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Monday with the Editor

Hallo
again
|
Tomorrow is Chinese New
Year's eve. Chinese families in Singapore and around the
world will come together for an evening of feasting called
the reunion dinner. Chicken, duck, abalone, sea cucumber,
shark's fin and many other delicacies will grace many a
dining table then. In recent times, having a steamboat
feast has become popular among Chinese households here as
it is much easier to prepare.
|
For those who can't be
with their families tomorrow evening - either because of
work commitments, overseas assignments, or perhaps, their
families have drifted apart - reunion dinner will not take
place. However, these chaps still need to eat and
celebrate in their own quiet way. For them, I wish a
better next Chinese New Year's eve in 2002. Just remember
- the only thing that is constant around us is CHANGE
itself. So having a quiet dinner all alone this year
doesn't necessarily mean having another such dinner the
next year. But I do remember having missed four years of
reunion dinners consecutively because I was working away
in the forex department of a bank in the early 90s.
However, then I was still single and family was far from
my mind.
|
Come what may, let's
just remember that with each passing Chinese New Year, we
are one year older, and ask ourselves - are we any wiser?
Food for thought today.
