The Coffin Is Too Big For The Hole - presented by The Theatre Practice

Click logo to start tour

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

Kuo Pao Kun’s acclaimed work “The Coffin is too Big for the Hole” has been played to numerous audiences worldwide. This coming September, the local theatre scene will see a new interpretation of the classic work, performed by Indonesia’s Teater Mandiri in a way never been seen before.

Through the extensive use of lights and sounds, coupled with the adapted technique of shadow play, Putu Wijaya, director of Indonesia’s Teater Mandiri, has seen the play in a new light, presenting it in a mystical and innovative way - straddling between the reality and fantasy, with emphasis on the evocation of emotions. It will let your imagination run wild under the foliage of a white backdrop and the rich language of movements.

Putu Wijaya is one of the most important and influential theatre figures in Indonesia, having bagged 19 national and international awards. His literary contributions include 40 scripts and novels, 1000 short stories, 18 screenplays, 3 film screenplays and 200 episodes of TV serials. A number of his works have been translated into Dutch, English, French, Russian, Japanese, Thai, German and Arabian.   Synopsis/Background

The Coffin Is Too Big For The Hole

Directed by Putu Wijaya

Presented by The Theatre Practice

Originally a monologue by Kuo Pao Kun, the play has been transformed into a visual and aural feast. Premiered to critical acclaim at last year's Asian Art Festival in Tokyo, with a theme dedicated to Kuo and his works, it has been hailed as "an avant-garde shadow play" with soaring sounds and flying light and shadows that dance in space.
