Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

Vocal music fans can look forward to the first full-fledged public concert by Singapore's Vocal Boy Band, Just_Us, on 8th February 2001, 8.00pm at Chijmes Hall. The all-male a cappella group of 9 singers was awarded The Harmony Award at Chijmes Hall in September last year. The group wowed the audience and the jury with their arrangement of Desert Rose by Sting.
The Harmony Award has been paying tribute to local a cappella singers since 1997 and past recipients have included veteran a cappella group, such as ES' Choir and SNJAZZ. Just_Us will be performing with a nine-member strength. Amongst them are two teachers, two architects, one engineer, two students and a national service man. Although a band that sings without the use of music instruments, all nine members are qualified musicians on the piano, guitar, bass and drums. They were also last seen performing on TV in Tonight With Gurmit and the recent Singapore Duck Race.
The group arranges and composes their own songs for the upcoming concert. Their music influence comes from Manhattan Transfer and Take 6. They will be presenting Desert Rose (Sting), the theme from Mission Impossible 2 and Star Wars Cantina (a tribute to Star Wars) in their concert. Tickets at S$15, S$20 & S$25 for this one-night-only concert are now available at ticketing hotline 332 6274 or via these websites or The concert is managed by Caldwell Arts, organizer of The Harmony Award, in association with just_us.
