|Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
|A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Monday with the Editor: Be alert during the festive
It's that time of the
year again when the Chinese throng Chinatown, as well as
shopping centres in search of new clothes, jewellery and
goodies to celebrate the Chinese New Year with.
also that time of the year again when pickpockets, as well
as thieves and robbers, get the most pickings from
unsuspecting shoppers who happen to jostle into their line
of sight. Just yesterday afternoon, my wife and I went to
a branch of Poh Heng Jewellery at Hougang Mall to get a
gold bracelet. When we got out of the shop and were moving
along the mall's atrium on the ground floor, I noticed -
from the corner of my eyes - that we were being followed.
By then, my wife, who was just in front of me, had made a
left turn into a corridor leading to the washrooms.
Luckily, I pulled her back and we turned back into the
busy atrium. Guess what! Just as we were turning, the chap
who had tailed us was about to make the turn into the
This chap, a foreigner,

My point is this - when
we are out shopping, keep an alert eye on our
surroundings. These pickpockets or robbers usually lie in
wait just outside a goldsmith shop, or nearby a
moneychanger's counter. They most likely work in groups.
So, keep an eye out for such people for you never know
when they will strike. Above all, if you have just bought
something valuable from a shop, never venture into a
desolate place. Have fun during this Chinese New Year - be
safe but not sorry!
