Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Monday with the Editor: Directory & Search
Engine
|
Hi |
It's
Monday again and the start of a new week. It's been a week
since Yahoo! re-categorised our website under its
Directories & Search Engines section. We were formerly
in their Tourist Information section. Now, we are together
with the big boys - Catcha Singapore, AsiaOne and
Singapore One. |
We are
pleased that Yahoo! has made this change on its own, and
not at our request. It shows two things: |
1. Yahoo! has
an ongoing review programme that seeks to keep its
database updated and relevant. |
2. Yahoo! has
recognised that our website has changed from being a
tourist-focused one to being a web directory and search
engine on Singapore. |
That
another portal has noticed our transformation proves that
content on our website has indeed expanded
sufficiently. |
The
next step is not an easy one. To maintain the standard
required of a directory & search engine, our website
needs to pump new content continually and at a quicker
pace than presently. Here we have a problem. We are not
making money on this website and therefore we do not have
the manpower to keep the many sections of our website
updated with fresh content. |
So, our
progress as a web directory & search engine will be
slow, but progress we will. We just have to work extra
hard at giving you information that you seek on Singapore. |
We
intend to invite guest columnists to write articles for
our website. But, as our purse-strings are quite tight, we
can only solicit voluntary contributions presently. If you
have a keen interest in a certain area, such as pets, or
if you have an event you wish to publicise here, please
e-mail me at editor
@getforme.com. I would love to hear from you. |
