Population

Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

  Hi again

The first three days of Chinese New Year have gone past and shops and the food stalls have begun opening for business again. In the past few days, some coffeeshops have opened for business in spite of the fact that many Chinese consider it taboo to open for business during the first few days of Chinese New Year. Some even opened on the first day of Chinese New Year itself! Food at the stalls in these coffeeshops certainly cost much more than usual. A plate of fish-ball noodles was sold at S$3 (S$2 usual price) and pohpiah could be had for S$1.50 (S$1 usual price). But, these stalls did roaring business the whole day as hungry residents swarmed these stalls.
Chap Goh Mei (15th Night) falls on the 7 Feb 2001. That will be the day when Chinese New Year celebrations come to a close with another big feast at the family dining table. In between today and 7 Feb 2001, visitors to Chinese households may not get Ang Pow packets as these red packets are usually given during the first few days of the Chinese New Year.
Students returning to school find themselves preparing for the common tests which fall this whole week. But, the big action in Singapore will be on the Hongbao Toto Draw happening on Thursday 1 Feb 2001. More than S$10 million will be up for grabs in this draw. This means that over the next few days, the lottery counters in Singapore will be jam-packed with eager punters hoping to make this new year a bumper one. So, expect to wait an hour or longer in long snaking queues for Toto, just like the ones on 25 Jan 2001. See pictures.
