Monday with the Editor: Coping with chicken pox Part 1
|
Hi
everyone
|
Ha! Ha!
Ha! Never thought I would come down with chicken pox. After
all, I'm now in my early forties and I have been near to
sufferers of the dreaded disease many times for as long as I
can remember. Yet, I have been fortunate to stay clear of
the chicken pox's nasty claws - till now, that is.
|
Yes, it's
true - I'm down with chicken pox, plain and simple. I found
that out last Wednesday, when I had fever (mid-38 degrees
Celsius) and a few watery lesions came out on my back near
my left shoulder and a lone one on my lower right arm. Yes,
I could count them- there were five exactly.
|
A visit
to the doctor late that evening confirmed my worst fears -
chicken pox was indeed invading my body. Apparently, I must
have been infected through someone's sneezing or cough 10
days to two weeks before these lesions appeared.
|
It's been
six days since the lesions first appeared. I have been
thinking to myself that there must be many people, around my
age, out there who have yet to succumb to the disease.
Perhaps, I should write down a blow-by-blow account of my
experience with chicken pox so that these people can
capitalise on my experience and learn the easy way to cope
with the disease - that is, if they should catch it.
Moreover, looking on the bright side of things, I thought I
should make full use of the unfortunate incident by writing
about it here.
|
Once the
prognosis was confirmed, many things automatically became
no-no things, such as:
|
- going
outdoors
|
- bathing
(according the the old folk)
|
-
chicken, eggs, black sauce, and seafood
|
- sitting
on the cold floor (ceramic, marble, mosaic, etc..)
|
- cold
drinks
|
-
airconditioning
|
- fan
blowing directly at you all the time
|
-
scratching of lesions, lest scars remain
|
My diet
was reduced to plain rice porridge and AAA brand pickled
vegetables that first evening. Nobody had been prepared for
the situation and that was the best they could do at home
then.

Birdsongs
& Other Pieces - The Music & Lyrics of Marc
CHAN Yew Jin |
With The
Reverie String Quartet - Clement LIM (violin), WONG Yeang
Chuan (guitar), Tracy CHIA (alto), Nadia TAN (soprano), Dawn
WONG (Alto). |
"Birdsongs
& Other Pieces" is the debut concert of young
Singaporean composer and lyricist Marc CHAN Yew Jin. The title
piece, a fusion between the classical art song and musical
theatre, is a song cycle that celebrates the most enviable
aspect of birds - flight. And coincident with that idea is the
idea of freedom. Some of the songs are settings of text by
various poets, such as Maya Angelou and Alfian Sa'at. The
other songs that complete the cycle have original lyrics by
Marc. The evening will also see the premiere of instrumental
works written in the past year. These include a suite of three
pieces for toy piano, a romance for violin and piano, and four
nocturnes for guitar. |
