Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Total Defence Day: 15 Feb 2001
This year's Total
Defence Day was commemorated yesterday in schools
across Singapore. The Ministry of Defence has also lined
up a week's programmes to put across the message of total
defence to the public.
|
Those
old enough will remember that Singapore fell to the
Japanese on 15 Feb 1942. Incidentally, it was also the
second day of the Chinese New Year then.
|
The concept of Total
Defence was first introduced in 1984 to highlight the
important role that every Singaporean plays in the defence
of Singapore. Total Defence comprises five aspects:
Psychological Defence, Social Defence, Economic Defence,
Civil Defence and Military Defence.
|
The theme of this
year's Total Defence campaign is "Total Defence: Be
Aware, Be Involved". It aims to increase awareness
of the various ways through which Singaporeans can be
involved in, and contribute to, Total Defence.
|
A four-day Total
Defence Carnival will be held at the Suntec City Mall
(open areas outside Towers 1, 2 and 5) from 15 to 18
February 2001. The participating agencies include MINDEF/SAF,
Ministry of Information and the Arts, Ministry of Trade
and Industry, Ministry of Manpower, People's Association
and the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
|
The carnival comprises
five sectors, each focusing on a particular aspect of
Total Defence. Interactive displays and activities at
these sectors will explain each Total Defence aspect and
more importantly, demonstrate how Singaporeans can get
involved and play their part.
