Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Monday with the Editor: Get Singapore things (2)
|
Hallo again
|
Last
Monday, I spoke at length about our Get Singapore
Things section which arranges to purchase Singapore
things on behalf of our foreign visitors and send such
things to them. I also mentioned that we had a recent
case in which a customer complained about the long wait
for her order because it took nearly a month for her
check payment to be cleared back to her own country,
i.e. USA. We despatched the goods last week when our
bank placed the check proceeds into our account.
|
Just yesterday, we
received an advice from our bank, dated 2 Feb 2001, for
the check clearance transaction and boy did we have a
shock! In sending this customer's check back to her own
country, USA, for clearing, we had incurred bank charges
on both sides - USA and Singapore. The customer's bank
charged us US$15 for clearing her check and our bank
here in Singapore charged us S$14. Total bank charges
worked out to about S$40.00. This customer's purchase
order only amounted to S$420.00.
|
Why
am I mentioning this? Well, we have incurred a loss in
this particular transaction. Of course, we can't very
well get back to the customer and tell her that we need
to charge her another US$15 on account of the extra bank
charges levied by her bank. It wouldn't be right. On the
other hand, we can't continue to lose money running this
service for our customers.
|
So,
to avoid all these problems - customers complaining
about bank accounts being debited with the purchase
amounts and goods not being sent as well as unforseen
bank charges levied on us - we have decided to do away
with check payments for purchases made through us. From
today onwards, we will only accept cash payments for any
purchase order(s). If you wish to order things
through us, please send us cash in United States
currency. For added safety, you may wish to register the
letter in which the cash is placed. It helps if you can
wrap the cash in carbon-copy paper. We regret having to
make this change, but it is for the benefit of everyone.
