Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
|
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Project Eyeball tests local search engines
|
In an article entitled "Small but useful for
Singapore" which appeared in yesterday's issue of
Project Eyeball, a local tabloid, one of its
reporters, Audrey LIM, compared three Singapore search
engines with one another and then pitched them against
global search engines, such as Yahoo!, Google and
Lycos.
|
Of particular interest to us was Eyeball's selection of
our website as one of the three local search engines
involved in their test.
|
We are delighted that Eyeball has seen us fit to rub
shoulders with the likes of SingSeek
and TechnoFind,
both of which are significantly stronger in terms of setup
and financial clout.
|
While we generally agree with Audrey's comments, we were
rather surprised that she remarked "A test with the
search term 'Project Eyeball' was humiliatingly fumbled by
the local search engines - they returned zero results, or
completely irrelevant ones."
|
So, we
did a search on 'Project Eyeball' using the FreeFind
search (above) and our search brought out FrontPage 21 Jul
2000, which was a feature article entitled "Project
Eyeball Goes Online!", together with a valid link to
their website. To view the article, click HERE!
We could not possibly have uploaded this article today to
prove her wrong as our feature article appeared on our
FrontPage for 21 Jul 2000, almost a year ago.
|
When we e-mailed Audrey yesterday to inform her of the
discrepancy, she immediately did a similar search and
wrote back to us, saying that as a result of our e-mail,
she did a search again yesterday and this time it yielded
positive results. Doesn't it sound rather strange to you?
|
But, let's not bicker. Our site does lack a good quality
search engine to power it. We promise you this - when we
are in funds, we will look for a better search engine to
help us help you in your searches. In the meantime, please
accept our apologies for all our shortcomings. To view
Project Eyeball's article, click HERE!
