Monday with the Editor: Give support to local talents/setups
|
Hi
|
We
tried to get some press passes to cover the National Day
Parade to be held next month. Alas! The organisers have
told us they have their own select group of media chaps to
cover the Parade for the public.
|
That
means we can't bring you pictures or details of the Parade
first-hand - we have to glean the information from the
local newspapers.
|
Just
why am I bringing this matter up? Well, for one thing, it
is very difficult, if not impossible, to get the mid-level
echelons of the Government to accord us due recognition.
The Government itself, at the top level, encourages talent
and wants local groups to be able to spread their wings
far and wide. Here at getforme.com, I believe we have been
able to deliver the goods - I think, overall, we have been
able to give you what you want. And we are still trying to
better ourselves in the name of progress.
|
Some of
you have been happy with what we have been dishing out
here. We try our level best. We have been working very
hard to keep this website going. But, somewhere along the
way, we also need the official government bodies to give
us support. We are helping to promote Singapore! Let them
help us promote Singapore too!
|
I tried
getting press accreditation some months back - but, I was
turned down. Apparently, press accreditation for the
Internet portals is something very new to the official
body giving the approvals - we are not recognised at
all.
|
Which
brings me to an important point. I am wondering why local
talents (I am not suggesting that getforme.com is a local
talent) or setups (Yes! we belong here) go unnoticed here
in Singapore until the wider audience of the world first
finds favour with them.
|
Why is
it that accolades from overseas must come to local
talents/setups first before the local support groups or
official bodies recognise such talents/setups?
|
Why
can't it be the other way round? The Government wants
Singapore to be a global arts centre. It has spelt out its
goals clearly. But, why is it that these goals trickle
down to the middle and lower rungs of Government?
|
As long
as fellow Singaporeans remain indifferent towards the
efforts of their own kind, who can we blame when these
local talents/setups are slow or even reluctant to share
glory with fellow Singaporeans.
|
It all
boils down to the typical Singaporean mentality - we are
sceptical of our own kind. To move ahead, we need to get
rid of that bad habit. The Government can only lead the
way. We must change our mindset.
