Population

Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Ministry Of Health Press Release: 7 Feb 01

ASSURANCE OF SAFETY OF BLOOD PRODUCTS AND VACCINES IN SINGAPORE

1. The Ministry of Health has been informed by JDH Pharmaceutical Division, the local agent of Bio Products Laboratory (BPL), that the 3 vials of the affected batch of immunoglobulin Inj "Vigam S" were sent by BPL to Inchcape JDH Ltd in Hong Kong on 31 Jan 97, and not to Singapore as earlier reported by BPL.

2. The Ministry would like to emphasise that there has been no importation into Singapore of immunoglobulin derived from British blood donors, and hence, no administration of contaminated blood products to any patient in Singapore.  The Ministry also reassures the public that the polio vaccine products registered for use in Singapore are safe and do not contain contaminated British blood
products, and that the contaminated BPL vaccine has not been approved for use
in Singapore.
3. The Ministry applies strict criteria of quality, safety and efficacy for the registration of blood products and vaccines in line with international standards. This includes requiring certification of the source of donor material from which the blood products are derived.  Since the discovery of variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (vCJD), the Ministry has excluded donor source material from UK.  The blood products and vaccines currently registered in Singapore are therefore derived from blood collected from non-UK donors.   A background paper on "vCJD and Singapore's Blood Supply" is attached for further information. Thursday's News

Local

In his first media interview, new EDB chief TEO Ming Kian said that  EDB would target companies and even startups in their plans to establish Singapore as a compelling manufacturing location in the world. Singapore did well to attract S$9.2 billion of new manufacturing investments. The S$10 billion target set by outgoing Chairman Mr Philip YEO before the Asian crisis remained a goal, said Mr TEO.

A national serviceman was found dead in unusual circumstances at his Serenade Walk family home on Tuesday morning. Mr YEONG Boon Leong, 22, was found motionless in front of a computer which was believed to have been displaying a pornographic image. Police do not suspect foul play.

Acupuncturists can apply to be registered from today. They have until 8 March 2001 to do so. The result of their application will be posted to them by 7 April 2001, the Health Ministry said in a press statement on Tuesday. Under the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Act passed in November 2000, all acupuncturists have to be registered by 1 Jan 2002.

Asia

Jakarta: With the threat of mass unrest hovering in the background and calls for a state of emergency in East Java, the armed forces (TNI) yesterday took the cue from Vice-President Megawati Sukarnoputri in ruling out an early impeachment of President Abdurrahman Wahid.

Around the world

Washington: With layoff notices mounting and consumer confidence plunging, the promise of President George W. Bush's tax cut may be coming in the nick of time to avert a full-blown recession, economists said on Tuesday.

Los Angeles: Sexual content on American television has risen sharply since 1997, showing up in two of every three programmes during the past TV season, according to a study released on Tuesday. Research conducted for the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation found sexual content in 68% of the 1999-2000 shows studied, up from 56% during the 1997-98 season. The US television season runs from September to the following May.
