Monday with the Editor: National Day Ponderings

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

This week is National Day week. National Day falls on Thursday. For most of us it is a time to reflect on what we as a nation have achieved through the years. For some, it may be a time to take stock of the events that have led to the slowdown of the economy and to find a way to avoid getting the sack in this difficult period. A few of us who have thought of job-hopping may have erased that idea from their mind presently.

What about those at school? This week is a short work-week for students - two days of curriculum work only. Wednesday's a half-day, and Thursday & Friday are school holidays.

But as many students across the island rejoice in the occasion, some will not have that privilege. Take for instance the 8-year-old girl whose mother allegedly dumped her into the 5th storey rubbish-chute of her HDB apartment. She fell five storeys into the bin on the 1st storey. Luckily, today she is alive and well, save for some superficial injuries.

But the psychological trauma of falling down some dark shaft and spending four hours amidst foul-smelling rubbish and cockroaches will, I am sure, remain permanently etched in her young impressionable mind. I wonder how this young girl will treat her own children when she grows up. Will she give them the motherly love and affection that she has been deprived of? Or will she get back at her mother through repeating the treatment with her children? Only time will tell whether the young girl's psychological wounds will ever heal. Therapy may not be able to eradicate such trauma.
