Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Watch Chingay 2001 at City Hall this Saturday
|
This
year's Chingay Parade takes place on Saturday 10
Feb 2001 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
Commencing from City Hall, it will wind round the Padang
and end at Suntec City for an End-of-Parade party at the
Suntec City Fountain of Wealth. More than 4,000 local
and foreign performers will take part in the Parade.
|
A
look back into the history of the Chingay reveals the
whole thing started in 1973 as the brainchild of Senior
Minister Lee Kuan Yew who was then Prime Minister. Mr
Lee wanted Singaporeans to have some noise during their
Chinese New Year celebrations to make up for the lack of
firecrackers which were just banned in Singapore at the
time. |
From
then on, the organisers never looked back. The first few
years saw Chingay as a mere float procession. In time,
Chingay grew into a full-fledged festival in its own
right. |
Chingay Singapore 2001 promises to be a different
experience with many first ever performances and
initiatives. Besides the Parade, this year's Chingay
celebration will include the Picnic @ Padang and
Carnival @ Esplanade Park. |
The Chingay celebration will stretch over three days
with the Preview at 8.30pm on 9th February, Picnic from
4.00pm till 10.00pm on 10th February and a 3-day
Carnival at Esplanade Park from 9th to 11th February.

10 Feb 2001 - Singapore time) |
