|Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
|A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Coin Collectibles Fair by Singapore Mint
The Singapore Mint
is holding a Coin Collectibles Fair at Funan The IT Mall
from now till 14 Jan 2001. The fair is open daily from
11am till 8pm. Admission is free.
The Fair occupies more
than half of the ground floor atrium in the Mall. Members
of the public can view various types of coins, as well as
banknotes and cashcards, on display in showcases. As this
is the Year Of The Snake, the Snake figures prominently
among some of the items available for sale. Choose from
the 2001 Lunar Pack uncirculated coin set @S$14.40; the
Lunar Pack comprising a cupro-nickel proof-like coin and a
cashcard (mintage 10,000) @S$38.00; a unique version of
Snake & Ladder comprising a gold-plated minted Baby
Tweety medallion and a Singapore Millennium bi-metallic
scallop-edged S$5 coin @S$16.80; and a 2001 Calendar with
12 minted stamps of the Almanac Series, among the many
items on sale here.
There's also a special
stand where you can exchange your spare 1, 5, 10, 20, 50
cent and S$1 coins for notes without incurring any fee.
But before you go searching for all your spare change,
take note - the queue is mighty long and you could end up
waiting about 1 - 2 hours before your turn comes along to
make the exchange. So if you have a lot of spare time on
your hands, do lug along your coins, otherwise - we
suggest you forget the idea. Click HERE
