Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

  Explore the unconventional use of traditional medium in abstract and contemporary Chinese painting. Catch a demonstration of the technique of ‘pigmentising-and-alumising’ invented by the artist, Dr CHEW Kim Liong and try it yourself in the workshop! You’ll be guided through experimentation in innovative ways of creating images in Chinese painting medium with techniques such as 'dripping’, ‘splashing', 'spraying', ‘crashing’, ‘masking’ and ‘marbling’.

  Dr CHEW is an active artist, art consultant and judge in national and international art competitions. His works have been exhibited in solo and juried art exhibitions and are collected by both public and private bodies in Asia, Europe and America. A scholar of Chinese and European painting, he was the first recipient of a PhD in Fine Arts from the Goldsmiths College, University of London. A visual arts professor, he currently lectures at the National Institute of Education, NTU.

  The lecture and workshop sessions take place at the Singapore Art Museum's Auditorium on 7 July 2001. The schedule is as follows:

  2pm to 3pm : Lecture/Discussion

  3pm to 6pm : Demonstration/Workshop. S$25 includes materials.

   Registration is required. Both sessions are conducted in English. (Free)

The China Beijing Opera

With English & Chinese subtitles

The Beijing Opera Troupe will radically alter any preconceived notions that the artform is meant for Chinese- speaking grandads and grandmas. Instead, this highly-acclaimed troupe has modernised China's age-old theatrical art with an adrenaline rush that captivates audiences from all walks of life, young or old.

The performance in Singapore will highlight six of the great Chinese classics, as well as a full-length feature of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. To fully appreciate the vibrant performance, pay attention to the remarkable acrobatics, face painting and the art of the glance (eye movements).
