  Good news for all current Primary Six students who have yet to get the jab this year - BCG is gone forever! Future batches of Primary Six boys and girls will not need to suffer scars on their left arm anymore. Just what is BCG, you may ask. It's certainly not Boy Chases Girl.

  BCG or Bacille Calmette Guerins (it's in French) is a vaccination given to all children at birth, and again at age 12, to prevent serious childhood Tuberculosis (or TB as it is commonly known). 

  Thousands of young boys and girls have suffered scars from this vaccination - scars which remain on their bodies to this day. Those who are lucky escape with a 1-cm diameter raised scar. I am one of these lucky chaps. However, the unfortunate have to put up with hideous-looking scars as long as 5-cm or even longer.

  Worse affected are the girls - these scars deform the smooth contour of many a slender left arm. They are also difficult to hide. 

  Just why is the BCG vaccination being withdrawn? It appears that despite numerous studies conducted worldwide over the years, there has been no scientific evidence to show that repeated BCG vaccination is effective in protecting against TB - the scourge of Singaporeans in the pre-70s era. 

  The World Health Organisation (WHO) no longer recommends repeat vaccination. Here, the Ministry of Health has, after a review, decided to stop the practice of a second BCG vaccination with effect from yesterday, 1 Jul 2001.

  So, 32 years after the first batch of 12 year olds here began the hate affair with BCG, new batches of students will see no reason to carry on this hate affair. And in a matter of years maybe, it will be forgotten. But, for those of us whom the scar has indelibly affected - the hate affair carries on. For more information, click HERE!

The performance in Singapore will highlight six of the great Chinese classics, as well as a full-length feature of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. To fully appreciate the vibrant performance, pay attention to the remarkable acrobatics, face painting and the art of the glance (eye movements).
