Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Wednesday 15 Aug 2000 Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew met Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday for a four-eyes meeting at Dr Mahathir's office in Putrajaya, the new federal administrative centre. Mr Lee arrived in Malaysia on Monday for a four-day informal visit. Compulsory education will be introduced in three years' time. The Compulsory Education Act will include counselling, fines or jail for parents who repeatedly fail to send their children to mainstream schools or national schools. There are exemptions - for children with disabilities, those attending the Islamic schools or privately-run San Yu Adventist Schol, or those on a home-school programme. Dr Aline Wong, Senior Minister of State for Education, said the Committee on Compulsory Education had discussed extending compulsory education to include secondary education but decided against it because it would be difficult to force unmotivated students to remain in school. The committee's 51-page report has been submitted to Parliament. From 28 Aug 2000, private buses will be allowed to use the bus lanes, but only those outside the Restricted Zone (RZ). However, they will not be allowed to stop and drop off passengers within the lanes. If this scheme works, they may be allowed to use the bus lanes inside the RZ as well. Dr Chin Kian Keong, senior manager (Road Pricing and Public Transport), said that the new ruling will allow people to move more quickly around town. Asia Seoul: North and South Korea yesterday took another step towards reconciliation with a poignant exchange of family visits. 100 North Koreans met their family members in a Seoul conference hall and 100 South Koreans met their relatives in a Pyongyang hotel. Around the world Moscow: Frantic efforts to reach a Russian nuclear submarine, trapped on the ocean floor, failed yesterday and chances of rescuing the 116 sailors on the vessel appear increasingly bleak, navy officials said. London: Anti-paedophile protestors have handed to the authorities a list of supposed sex offenders they want removed from a suburb of this southern English city, said police and city officials.
