Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Monday 14 Aug 2000 Singapore was the only counry in South-east Asia which did not see a slow-down in investments throughout the Asian crisis, said Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew yesterday. Last year, investments in the Republic amounted to 99% of what was received in 1996, before the financial crisis which swept through Asia in 1997 and 1998. Mr Lee predicted that Malaysia and Thailand would bounce back in three to five years' time. Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong supports the idea of citizenship for the best foreign players here. He said this at the National Stadium yesterday when he launched the National Football Academy, which is aimed at grooming complete footballers between the ages of 14 and 18. The Consumers' Association of Singapore (Case) has decided to investigate fast-food chain Long John Silver's automatic upsizing practice following a Straits Times report last Wednesday, "Is Long John Silver's overcharging?" Case has also referred the matter to the Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore to investigate whether the chain's posters and signboards are misleading. About 42 people have complained to Case about Long John Silver's practice of doling out a larger-sized drink than ordered and putting it on the bill - without asking customers first. Asia Sydney: Australian Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock was accused yesterday of "demonising" refugees by saying they were spending government benefits on mobile phones while topping up their income from charities. The criticism forced him to back down and admit he had no firm evidence to back claims he made last week that temporary protection visa holders were sending money obtained from their government to their families overseas. Around the world London: The British government is set to give its cautious go-ahead this week for the cloning of human embryos for therapeutic research, according to media reports here yesterday. London: One in five single British men and women is turning to dating agencies and lonely-heart columns to start relationships, confirming a trend researchers have found that modern lifestyle and job demands are killing off traditional relationships. Bachelor men and women are too busy keeping jobs, trying to climb the promotion ladder and sometimes too shy to make old-fashioned 'dates' with the opposite sex. Instead, they are taking the easier and quicker solution of finding a mate by turning to dating agencies and partner-finding sections of newspapers, magazines and television shows.
