I am a Hainanese. My parents were servants of British servicemen stationed here in the sixties. In my hands, I still hold some old letters of reference written by my parents' employers, praising my parents' work performance. I look back and I can honestly say I am proud of them. I am now past 40 and I only have this to say of the whole affair - What's the big deal all about?

We can't erase the fact that many of our parents worked for the British. We can't change history - that incident actually took place in the New World Amusement Park some 47 years ago. We very well couldn't have stopped such people from passing denigrating remarks on us then. For that matter, even today we can't stop the uttering of such insensitivity.

We can't put things behind us and pretend they never occurred. In fact, personally, it's good that the scene went on air because I got to know a little bit of history which I otherwise would not have been privy to - for I was born well after the incident occurred. On my part, I will make sure my children get to know of this incident - if only to enlighten them that all sorts of people make up the world we live in. We just have got to be tolerant for we are not a homogenous people here in Singapore. Tolerance is the glue that will help to make for a secure Singapore for our children and their children.
