Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Tuesday 15 Aug 2000 Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew arrived in Kuala Lumpur yesterday for a four-day informal visit. He is accompanied by Mrs Lee and senior officials. The number of conjunctivitis cases here has more than doubled over the past two weeks, according to the Ministry of Health. In a statement yesterday, the Ministry said that on average, government polyclinics treated about 800 patients with sore eyes each week. Among seven year olds, more than one in four is myopic, compared with one in eight in 1996. By the time they are nine, more than two in five suffer from myopia, or short-sightedness. Overall, 34% of young children in Singapore are short-sighted. Two people have been given two-month jail sentences each for killer-litter offences. Pua Kin, 53, admitted throwing three empty glass bottles from the fifth-floor kitchen window of her Tampines flat at Block 837 on 12 Jul 2000. Lisa Ho Soh Tee, 43, was also jailed after she admitted throwing a metal bucket from her seventh-storey flat in Hougang Ave 3. No one was injured in either incident. United Overseas Bank (UOB) Asia yesterday admitted that it had "erred" in its handling of the eWorldOfSports.com initial public offer (IPO) and apologised for its actions. In particular, it said it was sorry for not making "sufficient disclosure which would have given a fuller picture" of the IPO for the click-and-mortar sporting goods retailer. Asia Tokyo: Japan was a nation in shock yesterday after a 15-year-old newspaper delivery boy with a 10-cm-long survival knife slashed a family of six as they slept - killing three of them - in a rural community in Oita prefecture in south-western Japan early yesterday morning. Press reports quoting the youth said he intended to murder the entire family of farmer Kazumasa Iwasaki, 65, because he had been ticked off a week ago for allegedly peeping into the Iwasaki's bathroom. Mr Iwasaki's wife, his daughter and a grandson were killed in the attack. Around the world Washington: The latest information released by United States investigators about the fatal EgyptAir Flight 990 reinforces the theory that its co-pilot crashed the plane deliberately, say US aviation experts. The Boeing 767 plunged into the sea an hour out of New York on 31 Oct 1999, killing all 217 on board.
