Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
|
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Monday with the Editor: On e-mail enquiries received
by our website
|
Hallo
|
I would
like to take this chance to talk about the e-mails which
we have been receiving from local residents, as well as
visitors from the world over. I think I need to explain
why we have not been able to answer all the e-mails which
we have received so far.
|
We run
our website on a skeleton staff. We have only enough
resources to gather and post the information you see on
our website. Therefore, it is difficult to respond to
visitors' questions - though we very much want to - as
answering these questions would entail doing some running
around to locate the information needed - and we do not
have people to do that at all.
|
So, if
you have sent an e-mail enquiry to us and have not
received a reply to date - it means we are unable to help
you in your enquiry.
|
But, we
do try our level best to get answers for some of the
questions posed, eg. what website to go to for a birth
certificate extract if you have lost the original.
|
Perhaps, we have not been thoughtful here - we have not
replied to e-mail enquiries where we have been unable to
locate the information needed. On hindsight, I think our
website should at least respond to every e-mail request
for help, even though we may have to stretch our resources
a bit.
|
From
today onwards, as long as a visitor sends us an e-mail
enquiry, we will respond with a reply, even if we have
been unable to help. But, don't worry - our reply won't be
those "auto-responder" types where the computer
system automatically generates a reply the moment we
receive an e-mail. Every e-mail enquiry we receive is
read by us. If we can't be of help, what we will do is
type in a general response, such as "we are unable to
help".
|
However, we hope that when we start earning money on our
website, we will be able to hire staff specifically to
answer all your questions. In the meantime, we wish to say
'sorry for the inconvenience'. Do have a nice day.
