Project Eyeball says goodbye, for now
|
What
you see above is the cover page of yesterday's issue, and
also the last edition, of Project Eyeball, a local
tabloid, which has been suspended by its publisher,
Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), from today.
|
In its ten months on
the streets, Project Eyeball has endeared itself to the
young and Internet-savvy. But, it was its wrong timing -
perhaps Project Eyeball is, so to speak, ahead of its
time. It was Singapore's first integrated print and
cyberspace publication when it was launched in August 2000
at a street price of 80 cents each.
|
In the
ensuing months, two free print-version newspapers were
launched - STREATS on 2 Sep 2000 and TODAY
on 10 Nov 2000. These newspapers competed directly with
the tabloid for the attention of its readers. The ordinary
Singaporean had to choose between paying 80 cents for
Project Eyeball and getting the other newspapers free. I
guess it wasn't a difficult decision. Advertising revenue
fell in tandem with its reduced readership. The
newspaper's target circulation was 25,000 to 35,000 in its
first year. But, its readership fell steadily and before
it was suspended, many newspaper kiosks around Singapore
were not carrying the newspaper at their kiosks at all.
|
Project Eyeball used up
its war-chest and ended up with a loss of S$13.3 million.
The war-chest was supposed to last it through three years.
|
We are
sad to see it go; we just want to say this, "Come
back soon!"
