Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
|
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Two new TV channels come our way next month
|
|
These
two logos will soon be bombarded across our TV screens
every day. They represent the two new free TV
channels that will come on air next month.
|
Channel
U (Mandarin channel) & TV Works (English
channel) are owned by MediaWorks, the broadcasting arm of
Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).
|
With
their inception, the monopoly of MediaCorp as the sole
provider of TV channels in Singapore ends. The competition
they will generate is sure to benefit all TV viewers
as they add variety to the limited choices viewers have
now on television. MediaCorp may be expected to beef up
its TV programmes now that competition is staring in its
face. Previously, TV viewers have had to contend with
repeated re-runs of local, as well as foreign programmes.
The situation worsened when MediaCorp extended
broadcasting to 24 hours a day.
|
SPH
MediaWorks began its tuning-in exercise for its two
channels yesterday in preparation for the launch of
Channel U on 6 May 2001 and TV Works on 20 May 2001. For
SCV subscribers island-wide, no tuning-in is required as
they will be able to receive both Channel U & TV Works
channels on SCV 09 & 08 respectively.
|
Most
condominiums and HDB blocks are cabled so viewers can
receive both channels by simply tuning their TV sets.
|
Those
living in landed properties, as well as condominiums,
whose homes are not cabled, can receive both channels on
UHF 28 & 30 via their rooftop antenna. A 24-hour
tuning-in hotline (1800-743 8333) is available from 27 Apr
- 20 May 2001 to help those in need.
