Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
|
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Monday with the Editor: Keep hamsters as pets
|
Hallo
everyone |
These
days, a new pet is gaining popularity in Singapore. If you
have not guessed it yet, I am referring to hamsters. |
Most of
us, including me, live in HDB flats, and keeping pets can
sometimes be difficult. Dogs and cats may make very good
pets, but may also make your neighbours very bad
neighbours - if they don't share your liking for animals. |
Our Community
Issue section this month has some mention about dogs
and cats causing a flurry of debating about their good
points as well as bad ones. Two doctors even entered the
fray, one expounding the health problems associated with
keeping such flurry animals and the other knocking down
the first's arguments. |
Now,
back to hamsters. It doesn't cause much to start this
activity. A pair of hamsters costs about S$8 each. Put
together a cage (S$20) and some wood shavings (S$2), water
bottle (S$4) and hamster food (S$5), the whole venture
will set you back S$47. |
For
that paltry sum of money, you could spend an afternoon on
Orchard Road, have lunch, catch a movie for two persons
and perhaps do a bit of window shopping (and not buy
anything at all). |
But,
that sum spent on these creatures can result in endless
hours of fun and keep you and your loved ones busy for
ages. Plus, the activity is very therapeutic - you forget
your problems and keep stress at bay. |
Next,
you get to watch these little things grow, peck your
fingers - and once in a while bite them, causing minor
bleeding. But, it's all in the name of fun - no rabies and
that sort of things to worry your head over. Just losing a
bit of sleep, especially when your pet hamsters (provided
you bought a mating couple) mate and the female gives
birth! |
That's
the time when you will get a wee bit of stress, worrying
(as parents would) about whether the litter will make it
through the first few days of birth. |
A
warning comes in handy - be prepared to see your hamsters
mushrooming in numbers, for each litter can consist of
four to 10 baby hamsters. Also, be prepared to buy more
cages then. I started with one four months back. Now, I
have four cages. I started with two hamsters; now, I have
six lovely little brats. Have fun if you should decide to
take up this past-time. |
