Population

Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

The National Library Board makes it even easier for Seniors to pick up computer skills and the use of the Internet. Seniors have an opportunity to attend computer orientation and demonstration sessions which NLB has organised jointly with the Retired Senior and Volunteer Programme (RSVP).

These sessions are part of e-celebrations, the annual infocommunication technology programme by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). They will be conducted by members of RSVP, who are seniors themselves. RSVP guides will provide fellow seniors with handy tips and pointers on how to use the computer, and show how IT can help open a new world of knowledge and recreation for them.

There will be two separate sessions, one in English and the other in Chinese. Details of the programme are as follows:

In English:     Monday 2 April 2001

                     2pm - 5pm

In Chinese:   Thursday 5 April 2001
                     2pm - 5pm
Venue:           Toa Payoh Community Library
                     One Learning Place (Level 3)
                     6 Toa Payoh Central (319191)
Admission is free. Registration is now open and participation is limited to the first 50 participants who register. Seniors interested in participating can register by calling (65) 3545070 or coming in person to Toa Payoh Community Library.
