Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Tuesday 17 Oct 2000 Tuesday's News Singapore and Malaysia will not merge as one nation anytime in the near future, according to Senior Minister LEE Kuan Yew in an BBC interview in London last Friday. He was responding to a question on whether he foresaw a time when the two countries would merge and become one nation. Youngsters from 11 - 18 will be taught about sex and sexuality in school under a new government programme starting next year. Younger children will learn about puberty and the changes that happen to their bodies. Teenagers in secondary schools will get the facts on kissing in public, having sex, getting pregnant, pornography, homosexuality and the dangers of sexually- transmitted diseases. Sexual harrassment is among the issues older teens will discuss. This was announced by Dr Aline WONG, Senior Minister of State, Education, yesterday.
