Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Hallo
All childcare
centres, kindergartens, play groups, enrichment centres, special
schools, foreign system schools and learning centres which cater
to children five and below reopen in Singapore today
after two weeks of closure by the Environment Ministry due to
the Foot, Hand and Mouth Disease scare.
However, all wading pools in schools, public swimming pools and
condominiums, and play areas in shopping centres, fast food
areas, etc, where children gather, will remain closed till
further notice from the Hand Foot and Mouth (HFMD) Taskforce.
The Ministry of Community Development and Sports and the
Ministry of Education have instructed all operators of childcare
centres, kindergartens, enrichment centres, special schools,
foreign system schools and learning centres to do the following:
Screen all children
attending the centre to see if they are unwell. Isolate
immediately any child found to be unwell, or exhibiting symptoms
of HFMD, at the sick bay. Notify immediately the child's parents
and the Quarantine and Epidemiology Department at the Ministry
of Environment, either via Tel 7319181 or Fax 7348287, 7319368
when a child is found to be unwell. Continue to clean and
disinfect daily, the premises and the toys the children play
with.
It is hoped
the worst of the FHMD has already passed us by here in
Singapore.

Monday's News
The LIM Kim San
Professorship in Business Policy is being launched by the National
University of Singapore (NUS) today to acknowledge the significant
contributions made by Mr LIM Kim San to Singapore over the past four
decades. While in government between 1963 and 1981, he served as
Minister for National Development, Finance, Defence, Education,
Communications and the Environment.
In lightning raids yesterday
morning, crack police units arrested three dangerous criminals who were
wanted for two brutal slayings here, including the gun-killing of a
money-changer in Jalan Kukoh in August. Caught by surprise, the three
suspects, aged between 30 and 35, did not put up any resistance. Police
later recovered two guns - a revolver and an automatic pistol - and ten
bullets from one of the suspects' flats. The motive for both killings
was said to be robbery.
A 20-year-old Indonesian
maid fell to her death from a fifth-storey flat in the Southhaven
condominium in Hindhele Walk in Bukit Timah early on Saturday morning.
She is the fifth maid to die in this way this year. There have been 25
such deaths in the past four years.
A man was slashed to death
by a group of men armed with knives and wooden sticks on the ground
floor of City Plaza in Tanjong Katong Road yesterday. Cargo hand Roslan
Mohamed, 31, who was slashed in the throat and abdomen, died at the
scene.

New Delhi: India's most
populous state, Uttar Pradesh in the north, will offer free condoms with
mail deliveries in a bid to stem a population boom, The Indian Express
newspaper said yesterday. The state's population is estimated to have
grown from 120 million to 170 million in just a decade.
