Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

This year's Million Dollar Duck Race held in aid of charity will take place on 12 Nov 2000 at the area next to Read Bridge, Boat Quay.

Adopt a duck at S$10 each. There are 99,000 yellow and 1,000 red rubber ducks. They will be randomly selected for you. You can adopt them from 23 Sep 2000 to 29 Oct 2000 at the following places:

     - Full-time adoption centres: Promenade, all 30 eWorldofSports.com retail outlets, Singapore Press Holdings bus kiosks at The Hereen, the Embassy of Thailand and Lucky Plaza, and all Touch Community Service Centres.

     - Other centres: Wisma Atria, Shaw House, Ngee Ann City, Specialist Centre, Northpoint, Suntec City and Orchard Cineleisure.

     How the scheme works:

     - Each adopted duck costs S$10. Net proceeds go to Touch Community Service. With 100,000 ducks, it means S$1 million for charity

     - You win S$10,000 if your yellow duck comes in first on Race Day (12 Nov 2000)

     - You win S$10,000 and the bonus of S$1 million if your red duck comes in first

     - You can also win prizes if your duck is among the first 50 to cross the finish-line. Second prize: S$5,000, Third prize: S$3,000, 4th - 20th prize: S$1,000, 21st - 50th prize: S$500.

Results will appear in The Straits Times on 13 Nov 2000. It will also be posted on the website www.straitstimes.asia1.com.sg. Winners will also be notified by post.

Project work will become a must for all school students by the end of next year and will eventually count towards a student's year-end grade. It will also be inter-disciplinary in nature, cutting across subjects. By the end of next year, all primary schools, secondary schools and junior colleges will have implemented the programme, said the Education Ministry in response to queries from The Straits Times. From 2004, project work will form part of the university admission criteria for junior college and centralised institute students.

Of nearly 1000 buildings inspected by the Public Utilities Board over the past month, 49 were found to have sanitary pipes above water tanks. The PUB said the management corporations of the 49 affected buildings have been asked to redirect the sanitary pipes or relocate the water tanks.
