Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

The oil spill from the tanker that ran aground on Tuesday has reached the beaches of Sentosa, St John's Island and the adjacent Pulau Sakijiang. But it has not affected the fish farms off St John's Island, said the Agri-food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA).
Applicants for an ordinary liquor licence can now go online, submit and post it on the Customs and Excise Department's website. The department's website, www.gov.sg/ customs, also accepts e-mail objections from parties opposed to the application. The new system came into effect on Monday.

New Delhi: The wide-ranging defence agreement with Russia - including equipment deals worth US$3 billion (S$5 billion) - announced this week will put new backbone in India's military preparedness, analysts said. "The new equipment will enhance India's strike capabilities substantially," said The Economic Times.
Hongkong: The Hongkong government said yesterday it had decided not to prosecute protestors, including five student leaders, involved in an unauthorised rally in April. The decision followed a protest by 300 students and their supporters on Monday calling for the abolition of the public ordinance which requires police permits for marches involving more than 30 people.

Buffalo: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is probing whether a college student e-mailed death threats to Olympic athletics champion Marion JONES during the Sydney Games. An 18-year-old youth, whose name is being withheld, has been suspended from Fredonia State University, and a decision on whether to file charges could be made within a few weeks, according to First Assistant US Attorney Kathleen MEHLTRETTER.
London: British Airways has suspended 11 pilots and three cabin-crew members while it investigates whether they broke stringent rules limiting drinks before flights.
