Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

CityLink Mall - The subterranean mall
CityLink Mall is the new underground shopping mall that links Raffles City to Suntec City. It has been opened to the public for slightly more than three months. No longer do we need to worry about the hot sun or the rain when crossing over to Suntec City and the surrounding shopping centres, such as Marina Square and Millenia Walk. It's a cool fifteen-minute leisurely walk all the way from City Hall MRT Station through more than 50 shops sporting a variety of goods and services. No! underground malls are not stuffy, nor are they drab - at least not CityLink Mall. You get a wide passageway lined with trendy shops and skylights through which generous amounts of sunlight shine through, making you think you are in some building and not a tunnel. The mall also opens up into One Raffles Link, a new office building just next to Marina Square. In fact, you can come out of CityLink Mall at One Raffles Link, go up the escalator and cross the covered overhead pedestrian bridge into Marina Square and from there hop over to Millenia Walk. Senior Minister LEE Kuan Yew told reporters in France on Tuesday that Singapore had sought to buy up to 100 air-to-air missiles from the US to bolster limited military manpower and "to welcome whoever intends us harm". He said Singapore spent 6% of its annual gross domestic product on defence upgrades.
An elderly man died on Monday after he was hit by a taxi while crossing Jalan Anak Bukit. Mr LEE Mong Hua, 84, was hit near a pedestrian overhead bridge which is about 100 m from Beauty World Shopping Centre in Bukit Timah Road.
A Filipino maid who stole nine times from her employer shortly after she started work was jailed a total of 18 months on Tuesday. Lorina Gildo Oracion, 25, pleaded guilty to stealing goods and cash amounting to S$24,033 from Mr Kenneth Khin Chong, 35, at his Springside Avenue home in Upper Thomson.

Washington: The US Senate has overwhelmingly passed a Bill allowing some 600,000 more foreign workers, mostly from Asia, into the booming US high-tech industry. Senators voted 96-1 to allow an extra 195,000 s0-called H-1B visas, which are used primarily for technology workers, in each of the next three years.
London: One in eight independent schools in Britain plan to offer the tougher International Baccalaureate (IB) to their students as an alternative to the A-levels. Their decision comes amid growing criticism that the government's new A-level system does not stretch bright students, involves too much testing and does not give a wide-enough, all-round education.
