Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Saturday's News

Children will be able to splash in wading pools and have fun at fast-food outlets' play areas from Monday, after a month of curbs to break the spread of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). All remaining restrictions on places where children under the age of five gather will be lifted from Monday, the Ministries of the Environment, Health, Education and Community Development and Sports said in a joint statement yesterday.

Asia

Kuala Lumpur: In a move to woo back foreign investors, Malaysia is scrapping the 10 per cent exit levy on stock market profits which are repatriated after one year. This move was announced by Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin during Malaysia's 2001 Budget unveiled yesterday.

Around the world

Paris: The amount of suspected mad cow-tainted beef sold to supermarkets in a growing health scandal in France was around eight times more than previously thought, a French government agency said on Thursday. The amount in question is now believed to be around eight tonnes - previously only one tonne was believed to have been affected.

Seattle, USA: US serial killer Robert Lee Yates was sentenced on Thursday to more than 440 years in prison and a fine of US$60,000 (S$105,000) for 13 sexual murders spanning 25 years. Yates pleaded guilty to 13 killings in eastern Washington, mostly of destitute young women, from 1975 to 1998.
