Friday 28 July 2000 The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) yesterday changed its policy to allow the languishing Singapore dollar to rise in value against some currencies. The Singapore dollar jumped 0.2% against the US dollar after the MAS announcement, breaking through the $1.74 level. It soared from S$1.7415, shortly before 11.30am to S$1.737. To contain inflation, the MAS said it was prepared to allow a "gradual and modest appreciation" of the Singapore dollar against currencies of its major trading partners - known as "trade-weighted basis" - in the coming year.
