Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Thursday 27 July 2000 Three brothers who attacked a man at a Buddhist temple carpark were each sentenced to five months' jail yesterday. Chua Eng Huat, 33, a taxi driver, Chua Eng Seng, 25, a technician, and Chua Eng Lim, 30, a lorry driver, had earlier pleaded guilty to punching production manager Tan Yong Hock on 26 Apr 1998. But all three intend to appeal against the sentences and have each been released on S$10,000 bail. The latest Straits Times Consumer Confidence Poll shows that an overwhelming majority of those polled will not be buying branded goods, property or a car in the next three months. Most also said they will not be holidaying overseas. The survey conducted in late June revealed that fewer Singaporeans expect the economy to improve this quarter. Half of them expect prices of goods to increase. Registration for national service for all male Singaporeans and permanent residents born between 13 Dec 1982 and 12 Mar 1983 will start on Monday.
