Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Club Med will set up Club Med World, an urban entertainment centre where one can dine, "travel", be entertained and even learn some circus tricks, within or near Orchard Road for easy accessibility. The US$10 million (S$17.5 million) centre will have a 300-seat restaurant, a bar, and a performance area where patrons can listen to live music or watch circus acts. A lawyer was yesterday suspended from practising for two years for borrowing S$28,000 in 1998 from a client, Mr HAU Tau Khang, one of the owners of Sanur Restaurants. Devadas NAIDU, 42, a lawyer for 13 years, pleaded guilty to violating the rules when brought before the Law Society's disciplinary committee earlier this year. Yesterday, he had to show cause in a three-judge court why action should not be taken against him. The Nanyang Polytechnic School of Life Sciences starts next year. It will offer a three-year course focusing on molecular biotechnology and, in particular, human health care. For more information, call Ms Delphine LOW on Tel. (65) 550 0253. Asia Jakarta: The US State Department has suspended consular services at its embassy here in response to a possible terrorist attack, amid growing anti- American sentiment in Indonesia. Taipei: Taiwan yesterday marked the 55th anniversary of Taiwan Retrocession Day - the return of the island to the Chinese fold from Japanese colonisation - in a quiet way. The event was downplayed by the five-month-old CHEN Shui-bian government, which had decided to drop all the grand-style festivities previously organised by the old Kuomintang authorities. Around the world London: A British survey has found that curry can cause sexual arousal - the spicer the curry, the greater the stimulation. Researchers at Nottingham Trent University monitored more than 100 volunteers up to the age of 80 and found that the taste of curry sent blood pressure and heart rates shooting up, creating a "natural high". It sets off biological responses and creates a feeling of stimulation. Researchers also found that curry is addictive. The survey was done after earlier surveys showed that British people now buy more Indian take-away meals than fish and chips or Chinese meals. Paris: "Mad Cow" fears snowballed after more supermarket chains pulled suspect beef from their shelves and one group announced that stringent new checks would be put in place to calm consumer panic.
