Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

CPF
INTEREST RATE AND HDB MORTGAGE RATE FROM 1 OCTOBER TO
31 DECEMBER 2000
The CPF
Board will continue to pay interest to its 2.8 million
members at the rate of 2.50% per annum for CPF savings in their
Ordinary and Medisave Accounts from 1 October to 31 December
2000.
The computed CPF interest rate derived from the interest
rates for the three-month period, 1 May 2000 to 31 July 2000,
works out to 2.14% per annum.
However, the
Board will be paying the higher rate of 2.50% per annum as the
CPF Act provides for a minimum CPF rate of 2.50% per annum. This
minimum rate is higher than the 12-month fixed deposit and
savings rates of the four major local banks for the May to July
2000 period.
Savings in the Special and Retirement Accounts will earn
interest at 4.00% per
annum. This is 1.5 percentage points higher than that for
the Ordinary and Medisave Accounts.
The
concessionary interest rate for HDB mortgage loan, which is
pegged at 0.1 percentage point above the CPF interest rate for
Ordinary and Medisave Accounts, will also remain unchanged at
2.60% per annum from 1 October to 31 December 2000. The next
revision of the CPF interest rate will be made on 1 January
2001. Members with enquiries may call the CPF Call Centre on
1800-227 1188 (Code 1)
