Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Tuesday 25 July 2000 The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore has revealed that almost every home and office in Singapore will have access to superfast Internet in five years' time. Land and property owners must ensure that any excavation work they do on their own land does not affect or damage the property next door. If they fail to take preventive measures, for example, by building retaining or support walls, they will be liable to pay hefty compensation if cracks or other faults appear on their neighbour's property. Singapore's highest court, the Court of Appeal, made this ruling yesterday, overruling an archaic English land law which, for 120 years, has allowed land owners free use of their property. A 15-year-old girl, who joined in the cruel assault of another teenager, was sent to jail even though she was a minor. The girl, who cannot be named, was given a total jail term of 5˝ years by the High Court for joining other youngsters in the assault of the 14-year-old victim over 17 days in an Ang Mo Kio flat. In the past six months, there have been seven cases of arson involving motorcycles in Bukit Batok housing estate, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). In all, five motorcycles, three motorcycle covers and two scooters were set ablaze. Police have dropped charges against a 13-year-old boy who printed a S$2 note with an inkjet printer. They have also returned the computer equipment he used to make the fake note. He is a secondary one student at MacPherson Secondary School. No further action will be taken against the boy, said the Commercial Affairs Department. Two juveniles and a woman were charged separately yesterday with killer-litter offences. One of the girls, aged 14, allegedly threw two glass bottles and a plastic bag filled with water from a ninth-floor flat in Bishan on 7 May 2000. The other, also aged 14, is said to have thrown a plastic bottle and a water-filled plastic bag from the same unit the same day. In another court, Michelle Lim Seok Hiang, 49, was charged with throwing an assortment of items from her fourth-floor flat in Block 217, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 at 2.20am on 22 Jul 2000. Asia Bangkok: ASEAN must reinvent itself to regain lost ground or it will risk losing its relevance in the new global economy, where increased competition is expected from other parts of Asia, its foreign ministers said yesterday. Around the world London: Tiger Woods takes the British Open, becoming the fifth and youngest champion ever to win all four Grand Slam golf tournaments.
