Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Monday 24 July 2000 Drink-driving claimed its second victim in less than two weeks as a national serviceman died two hours after a road accident yesterday. Mr Lim Yam Beng, 21, and his 15-year-old girlfriend were thrown off their motorcycle after it collided with a car at the junction of Clementi Road and Commonwealth Avenue West around 1.40am. The 56-year-old driver has been arrested. A robber who targeted lone women in lifts and taxi drivers at least 20 times all over the island in less than two months has been caught.Police arrested him in his Bukit Batok flat on Saturday. The man was found to be an unemployed 35-year-old drug addict. He had struck in housing estates in Bukit Batok, Jurong West, Woodlands, Bedok and Yishun. The government's tax takings surged by nearly S$2 billion in the first five months of the year, providing conclusive evidence that the Singapore economy has in fact recovered strongly. The state collected a whopping S$7.3 billion in taxes from January to May this year, a 36% increase over the S$5.4 billion collected in the same period last year.
