Coming from a generation which grew up in the sixties and seventies, I could not but be taken aback by the students' answers. I have no children at present. But surely, these kids' parents, who evidently came from my generation (I saw their parents talking to them earlier) and benefited from the leadership provided by Mr Lee, should have imbued such knowledge in their children. If these two children's answers reflect the answers of their peers, I shudder to think what answers the next generation of students will come up with when posed such a question.

Our nation, at 35 years of age this year, is considered young. Our beginning was tumultuous. But, we have been enjoying unparalleled peace and prosperity since. We owe it to those who have made sure we get to where we are today. Those from my generation are in their forties now. They have never had it so good. Their children also bask in the goodness that has come about. It is when we are enjoying ourselves most that we need to search our conscience and ask who has helped brought about such success. All we need do is to open our mouths and tell our children who our benefactor is - that's about all. Is it that difficult to do? Or have we, in our complacency, put such things at the back of our minds simply because it is passè and we can't be bothered about it any more?

The way to move ahead is to remember to give gratitude where it's due. I daresay without that man who shouted "Merdeka!", none of us, including our children, would have come this far and enjoyed life thus.
