Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Hallo again Christmas Day may be two months
away but Christmas trees have sprouted at several department
stores and shopping centres over the last two days. Commercials
with the Christmas theme have started showing up on television
screens.
That means the Christmas season is here again. We will be
crossing into 2001 in just about 70 days. Students will be among
the first groups to get into the Christmas spirit as their
school holidays are drawing near. In fact, here in Singapore
schools, the secondary 1s, 2s, and 3s have finished their
year-end examinations. So have the primary 4s and 6s. So you
should be seeing more of these youngsters along Orchard Road and
other shopping areas. That leaves the primary 1s, 2s, 3s and 5s - who
will be taking their examinations from today till next week -
and the secondary 4s and 5s - who will be taking their 'O'
levels in about 14 days. Here at Getforme.com, we will be
marking our first anniversary online on 28 Nov 2000. So what are
our aspirations for 2001? Well, we hope to be able to come up
with a mortar-and-bricks cybercafe soon. To this end, we have
bought over the domain, www.singaporecybercafe.com.
Expect to see us offering offline, real-world value-added
services, such as P.O. Boxes, discounted Internet surfing, fax
and secretarial services, at our cybercafe for you, our website
visitor, in Singapore. We
received our 600,000th hit on 21 Oct 2000!

Monday's News
A 30-year-old Thai woman was
arrested on Saturday night in connection with the case of a baby girl
abandoned in a Geylang hotel last Sunday. She will be charged in court
for overstaying.
Light-fingered youngsters
who shoplift appear to have a preference for stores in the Orchard Road
shopping belt and popular retail areas in the southern part of
Singapore. A study by the sub-ordinate courts revealed that these trends
were true at least for the shoplifting cases dealt with by the Juvenile
Court recently. The young offenders' favourite poaching ground was
Takashimaya Department Store, followed by Northpoint, Suntec City,
Isetan Scotts, Wisma Atria, Cold Storage (Northpoint), Isetan Parkway
Parade, Carrefour and Metro Marina.
Asia
Manila: Philippine President
Joseph Estrada, facing impeachment charges for allegedly taking bribes
from gamblers, suggested yesterday he might agree to a snap presidential
election if there was public support.
Kuala Lumpur: A 15-month-old
baby boy who was kidnapped by his Indonesian maid four days ago is back
at home, ending an emotional roller-coaster ride for his parents.

Paris: France's Agriculture
Ministry has ordered one of the country's largest supermarket chains,
Carrefour, to withdraw from its shelves meat potentially contaminated
with "mad-cow" disease. The ministry said in a statement on
Saturday that about one tonne of beef from a herd of cattle, in which a
case of "mad-cow" disease was found, had been sold to
Carrefour supermarkets.
