Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Saturday 21 Oct 2000 Saturday's News The Infocommunications Authority of Singapore (IDA) yesterday announced that it will award four third- generation (3G) licences in an auction starting next February. But, these will be auctioned off to the highest bidders instead of selecting operators based on the most attractive proposals. The minimum bid for each licence is S$150 million. A TIBS taxi ride will generally cost more than the same trip with one of the other taxi companies. The exceptions are when you take a TIBS taxi during public holidays or from the Central Business District (CBD) during peak hours. This was the result of a Straits Times comparison of taxi fares charged by TIBS, Comfort Transportation and CityCab. The survey was triggered by the run of consumer complaints about TIBS tax fares since the company revised its fare structure in July 2000. Raw fish vendors will soon have to store their wares in a display chiller until the dish is served to the customer. The new law, which comes into effect on 1 Nov 2000, requires the 37 hawker stalls and restaurants selling raw fish, or yu sheng, to install a chiller if they do not already have one approved by the Ministry of the Environment (ENV). Asia Tokyo: The husband of a former insurance agent accused of killing four people with arsenic- laced curry was sentenced to six years in prison for fraud. Kenji Hayashi, 55, and his wife, Masumi, had pleaded guilty to charges that they conspired to defraud insurance firms of a total of 160 million yen between 1993 and 1997. The 39-year-old wife is being tried separately on charges that she killed people with arsenic- laced curry at a 1998 summer festival in Wakayama, a city about 450 km south-west of Tokyo. Around the world Los Angeles: US West coast airports were plunged into chaos on Thursday as a computer crash of radar equipment in Los Angeles grounded hundreds of flights, forcing thousands of passengers to be delayed for several hours. Paris: The macho sport of mountain biking inflicts damage to the scrotum and testicles and is a potential cause of impotence, say Austrian scientists who blame vibration from rough terrain and a hard saddle. Their research, to be published in the 21 Oct 2000 issue of The Lancet, makes painful reading for any male cyclist keen on off-road biking. The doctors from the departments of radiology and urology at University Hospital, Innsbruck, carried out ultra-sonic scans on 45 amateur mountain bikers aged 16 to 44. London: Parents of truants can be jailed for three months or fined GBP2500 (S$6375) under tough new government laws to halt the growing number of British children skipping school.
